Whispering wool
My artwork, titled 'Whispering Wool,' presents a pair of individual 'sheep' forms, made of stoneware clay. The choice of white stoneware clay lends a sense of coziness. It suggests a delicate, almost fibrous texture.
This clay 'wool' creates a fascinating tactile and visual contrast with the denser forms of the sheep's bodies.
The surfaces of these sculptural sheep are enhanced with a transparent glaze allows the inherent character and subtle variations of the stoneware clay to shine through.
And this transparency are touches of beige glaze in a way that mimics the natural variations in sheep's warmth to the overall composition.
The two sheep are conceived as individual entities, 'not stuck there,' implying a sense of autonomy and a dynamic relationship within the space they occupy.
The title, 'Whispering Wool,' evokes a sense of quiet communication and the gentle, almost silent, presence of these beings, their stoneware 'wool' hinting at a story waiting to be heard.
The creation of the the delicate wool with the robust stoneware clay, all unified by the transparent and beige glazes, creates a piece that invites contemplation on texture, form, and the quiet beauty of the natural world translated through the language of clay.
